About Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Command & Conquer: Red Alert dropped in November 1996 from Westwood Studios and remains a landmark real-time strategy title. The story hinges on Albert Einstein traveling back to 1924 to stop Hitler, which accidentally removes Nazi Germany and leaves the Soviet Union as the primary aggressor. You play either as the Allied forces or the Soviet Empire in this alternate history where tanks roll across Europe and spies sabotage operations. The game launched on PC and DOS before appearing on PlayStation, PS3, PSP, and other consoles. It pits you against a relentless Red Storm that threatens to swallow the continent while your units scramble to hold the line.

Gameplay

You build bases, manage resources like credits and ore, and churn out units in real time. The flow involves gathering materials from power plants and refineries to fund infantry squads, tanks, or aircraft. Each faction offers distinct tech trees and special abilities that change how you approach a match. A typical session sees you rushing to secure choke points while defending against enemy flanks or air raids. Multiplayer modes test your ability to outmaneuver opponents in fast-paced skirmishes where a single mistake can cost you the whole game. Controls feel responsive on PC, though console versions required some adaptation for base building and unit selection.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows this title sits high on our charts with a Metacritic score of 81 and an IGDB rating of 85 from 360 users. The community vibe leans heavily into the strategic nature of the game, with five votes calling it strategic and four emphasizing competitive play. Two players described sessions as intense, while one found the time paradox elements mind-bending. Average playtime extends far beyond a single campaign due to replayability in multiplayer lobbies. Review snippets frequently mention the tension of defending against overwhelming Soviet numbers or the satisfaction of pulling off a surprise Allied air strike.

PlayPile's Take

This is a solid RTS for anyone who enjoys base building and tactical combat without needing modern graphics. The price varies by platform, but the achievement list on PC offers plenty of reasons to grind through every mission. You get 360 ratings to back up the hype, and the community moods confirm this game demands focus. It works best for players who want deep strategy over flashy visuals. Skip it if you prefer casual mobile games or hate managing multiple unit groups at once. Play the original PC version first before touching a ported console edition.

Storyline

In 1946, Albert Einstein finishes his time machine, dubbed the Chronosphere, and travels back in time to 1924, just after Adolf Hitler was released from prison in Landsberg. There, he creates a time paradox which erases the dictator from history, and returns to his starting point. With Nazi Germany removed from history, the Soviet Union is left unopposed as Joseph Stalin sees an opportunity to expand into Eastern Europe. In response, most of Europe ally against this new threat, and start a desperate war against the new aggressor.
