Westwood Studios

United States Founded 1985

Westwood Studios (known as Westwood Associates from 1985 to 1992) was a video game development company founded in 1985 by Louis Castle and Brett Sperry, and specialized in role-playing games and real-time strategies. The studio was famous for popularizing the real-time strategy genre with Dune II and their proprietary Command & Conquer series. Following a peak of popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s under the leadership of Virgin Interactive and, later, Electronic Arts, the studio was disbanded in 2003. In 2015, Brett Sperry and Louis Castle received the Industry Icon award at The Game Awards in the name of Westwood Studios.

Westwood Studios at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile to find out who developed the classic strategy games from the early nineties, Westwood Studios is the name you will encounter. Founded in 1985 as Westwood Associates and operating until their disbandment in 2003, this American developer released 25 titles during their active years between 1990 and 2002. Their catalog spans a wide range of platforms, with the majority of their work built for PC on Microsoft Windows or DOS. They also released games for Mac, Amiga, Sega Mega Drive, and Nintendo 64, showing a clear focus on personal computers during an era when console gaming was growing rapidly. The company is best known for real-time strategy and role-playing games. Out of their 25 releases, nine titles fall under the Strategy genre and eight are specifically Real Time Strategy. Their output in the 1990s was substantial with 20 games, while their final years from 2000 to 2002 saw a drop to just five titles. This shift coincides with a noticeable change in the quality of their work according to user ratings on IGDB. The studio holds an average score of 74.2 across 21 rated games. Their peak period produced some of their highest scores, including Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty at 90 out of 100 and Command & Conquer: Red Alert at 85. These early hits established them as a major force in the industry. In the final years of operation, the ratings trended lower compared to their golden era. Recent releases from the early 2000s show a decline in performance. Emperor: Battle for Dune scored 77, while Nox received 73.8. Even more recent entries like Command & Conquer: Renegade dropped to 63.9 and Earth and Beyond settled at 69.5. Their overall rating breakdown includes six great titles, thirteen good ones, and two mixed scores. There are no poor-rated games in their database, but the drop from their initial 90-point peak to the low 60s for later entries suggests a struggle to maintain their former standards as they moved into new genres like action shooters with Renegade. Westwood Studios received the Industry Icon award in 2015 for their lasting impact on gaming. Their legacy remains defined by the Command & Conquer series and Dune II, which popularized real-time strategy before the studio closed its doors in 2003.
