About

Deep Dungeon IV: Kuro no Youjutsushi is the final entry in a classic 16-bit dungeon-crawling RPG series. You play a lone hero joined by two locked-class party members as you navigate bite-sized underground labyrinths. Unlike earlier entries, character stats level up unpredictably, and custom builds are gone. Battles let you summon temporary monster allies, but there's no escape from random encounters even when overleveled. The game introduces optional side requests from NPCs, offering extra rewards for completing tasks outside the main path. The biggest shift is tighter level design, dungeons now fit inside single 32x32 tile areas instead of large multi-floor mazes. While some mechanics from Deep Dungeon III are trimmed, the smaller maps and added quests create a more direct experience. Released in 1990 for Japan's Family Computer, it carries forward the series' turn-based strategy roots with subtle tweaks that distinguish it from its predecessors.
