Chains of Olympus is a prequel to the original God of War, set a decade before its events. Kratos battles Persian invaders, mythical creatures, and the spreading darkness of Morpheus. Combat remains brutal and methodical, blending melee attacks, magic spells, and environmental puzzles. Players gather red orbs to upgrade weapons, Gorgon eyeballs to restore health, and Phoenix feathers to bolster magic. New abilities like the Sun Shield and Efreet spell expand Kratos’ arsenal, while quick-time sequences and box-pushing puzzles add variety to the action. The HD remaster sharpens textures, adds 3D support, and locks in a smooth 60 frames per second. Though part of a bundled collection, it stands alone as a cohesive adventure. Community feedback notes the game’s brisk pacing and tighter controls compared to earlier entries. While the story serves more as a bridge between Kratos’ past and present, the return of the Blades of Chaos and fast-paced boss fights keep it engaging for series veterans.
Set halfway through Kratos' ten years of servitude to the Gods, Chains of Olympus begins with Kratos being dispatched to the city of Attica to help defend it from the invading Persian army. Soon after his arrival, the Spartan spots a basilisk climbing over the city walls and gives chase. During his chase, Kratos confronts the Persian King inside the city and kills him. Taking the King's power to summon the Efreet, he then encounters the basilisk and kills it. After defeating the basilisk, he witnesses the sun fall from the sky, plunging the world into darkness. Following the dim remaining light on the horizon, Kratos fights his way through the city of Marathon, along the way encountering the black fog of Morpheus, which now covers the land in darkness.
