Ready At Dawn Studios was founded in 2003 by senior members of Naughty Dog and Blizzard Entertainment and set a new standard for PSP games with its multi-million selling, Game of The Year award winning titles Daxter and God of War: Chains of Olympus. Ready At Dawn’s technological innovations, its reputation for excellence in artistry and design, and its combined experience developing blockbuster franchises, ensure the studio will continue to raise player expectations. In August 2024 it was announcement that Meta would be shutting down Ready At Dawn.
Ready At Dawn launched in 2003 with a team drawn from Naughty Dog and Blizzard Entertainment. The studio released ten games over its active run from 2006 to 2021, serving only as a developer for all of them. Their catalog spans three decades but shows a clear shift in focus. They started slowly in the 2000s with just two titles, then accelerated to seven releases in the 2010s before slowing down again with a single entry in the 2020s. Early work established them as a strong partner for PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 hardware. Their first major hits included Daxter and God of War: Chains of Olympus, both rated above 80. The studio followed this up with God of War: Ghost of Sparta, which also landed in the great range. These early projects were mostly adventure games with heavy action elements. They released three games for the PlayStation Portable, three for PC, and focused heavily on the adventure genre throughout their career. In the later years, the company pivoted toward virtual reality. They produced three titles for Oculus Rift and two for Oculus VR, along with games for the Quest headset. This shift resulted in some of their highest-rated work. Lone Echo from 2017 holds a score of 89.7, while its sequel Lone Echo II in 2021 scored 88. These VR titles represent the peak of their performance on the platform. However, their foray into other areas was less consistent. The Order: 1886 received a mixed rating of 66.3, and De-formers dropped to 40, which is considered poor. Overall, Ready At Dawn has a solid reputation with five great titles and three good ones out of nine rated games. They never produced a poor title in their main catalog, though one entry fell into the mixed category. Their output was not massive compared to industry giants, but they maintained high quality for a decade before focusing on VR. The studio ceased operations after Meta announced the shutdown in August 2024, ending an era that began with helping define handheld gaming standards.
