Sweden Founded 2003 Website

Avalanche Studios is an independent AAA developer dedicated to creating huge open worlds, full of explosive, emergent gameplay. You probably know us as the creator of the Just Cause franchise, or the developer of Mad Max, which was released in September of 2015. We created the critically acclaimed XBLA/PSN twin stick shooter Renegade Ops, we manage more than 6 million players in the online world of theHunter, and are currently hard at work on several future projects. Here’s a look into our world.

Avalanche Studios at a Glance

Avalanche Studios is a Swedish developer founded in 2003 that has released 21 games since 2006. Most of their catalog consists of titles they developed themselves, with only five where they acted solely as publishers. Their output was very quiet in the 2000s with just one game, but it surged during the 2010s when they released 15 titles. Activity slowed again in the 2020s with only two releases recorded so far. The company focuses heavily on Adventure and Shooter genres, which make up 29 of their projects combined. They also have a smaller presence in Racing and Simulator categories. Platform availability shows a strong bias toward personal computers, with 20 games on Windows. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are the next most common consoles at 12 releases each. Older systems like the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and original Xbox have fewer entries. Their average rating across 10 reviewed titles is 69 out of 100. This score reflects a mostly positive reception where eight games are considered good. There is one title rated as mixed and no poor entries. Only Just Cause 2 from 2010 reached the great category with an 81 score. Other well-received games include Just Cause 3, Renegade Ops, Mad Max, and TheHunter: Call of the Wild. The studio is known for the Just Cause franchise and the open world action game Mad Max. They also created the twin stick shooter Renegade Ops and manage the online hunting simulation TheHunter. Recent activity shows they released several editions for older games like Just Cause 2 and Just Cause 4 in late 2019 and 2021. A DLC pack for Generation Zero appeared in December 2022. While their bio claims to create huge open worlds, the actual data shows a steady stream of action titles rather than a massive volume of experimental projects in recent years.
