Choice of Games LLC is a California limited-liability company dedicated to producing high-quality, text-based, multiple-choice games. We produce games in house, beginning with Choice of the Dragon and Choice of Broadsides. We have also developed a simple scripting language for writing text-based games, ChoiceScript, which we make available to others for use in their projects, and we host games produced by other designers using ChoiceScript on our website. Some of our games are available for free on the web. We also produce mobile versions of our games that can be played on iPhones, Android phones, and other mobile devices. We believe that text-based games are an underutilized format within modern computer games. Just as motion pictures, radio dramas, and television supplement books without rendering them obsolete, similarly modern graphic-based games cover only part of the computer gaming landscape. By using text, we can interact with the imagination in different ways from a graphics-based game. We can also allow game designers to quickly and inexpensively produce games in comparison with graphics-based games.
Choice of Games is a United States publisher that has been active since 2010. Their catalog on PlayPile includes 126 titles, with the company acting as both the primary developer and publisher for almost all of them. The studio operates across many platforms, though PC Microsoft Windows remains the dominant platform with 125 releases. They also support Linux and Mac with 115 versions each, while mobile presence is smaller at 29 iOS and 24 Android titles. A single DOS version exists among their library. The company focuses heavily on the indie genre, which accounts for 124 of their games. Role-playing games make up 121 titles, and adventure games comprise 104. They have also released five visual novels, one puzzle game, and one simulator. Their output was much higher in the 2010s with 93 games compared to 33 in the 2020s. This shift suggests a slower pace of production in recent years. Quality ratings show a mixed but generally positive trend. Across 63 rated titles, the average score is 65.7 out of 100. There are no poor-rated games on their list, which is a positive sign. However, the majority fall into the good category with 40 titles scoring between 60 and 79. Ten titles received great ratings of 80 or higher. Several older releases from 2015 and 2016 achieved these top scores, including Choice of the Pirate, Hollywood Visionary, Versus: The Lost Ones, Pendragon Rising, and Psy High. Choice of Games builds its games around text-based choices rather than graphics. They developed a scripting language called ChoiceScript to help writers create these interactive stories efficiently. Some games are free on their website, while others are available as mobile apps. Their approach treats text as a way to engage the imagination differently than modern graphic-heavy games. Recent releases like House of the Golden Mask and An Imp and an Impostor show they continue to publish new work through late 2025, though at a reduced rate compared to their peak production years in the previous decade.
