CyberFront Corporation (株式会社サイバーフロント kabushiki gaisha saibaafuronto) was a game development and publishing company for the Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PSP, and PC platforms. The company was founded in 1998 by Shinji Fujiwara and was located in Japan. Kaga Electronics, Co. Ltd., acquired 51% of the company's shares in April, 2010 and the company became a subsidiary of Kaga Electronics. Kaga Electronics bought the remainder of the shares in March, 2013 and the company became a 100% owned subsidiary of Kaga Electronics. On December 19, 2013, an official notice of dissolution was released by the company. The notice states that events leading to the dissolution were primary due to "inadequacies in CyberFront's intellectual property rights but that there were also claims that by business partners actually denying etc. the existence of such rights." Additionally, no cooperation was received from the then retired founder, despite requests for assistance.
CyberFront operated as a Japanese publisher and developer from 1994 until its dissolution in December 2013. Founded in 1998 by Shinji Fujiwara, the company released a total of 23 games on PlayPile, with 22 titles listed under their publishing credit and only two under development. Their catalog spans multiple genres, but visual novels dominate their output with fourteen releases, followed closely by adventure games at ten titles. They also published shooters, strategy games, simulators, and a few racing or role-playing entries. The company showed significant platform diversity across its lifespan. Most of their work appeared on Microsoft Windows, accounting for 14 games, while the PlayStation Portable hosted 11 releases. The PlayStation 2 saw nine titles, and smaller numbers reached Mac, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iOS, and other consoles. Their activity grew over time, starting with just three games in the 1990s, expanding to twelve in the 2000s, and releasing eight more in the 2010s before closing down. Quality metrics for CyberFront show a mix of average results rather than standout hits. Across seven rated titles on PlayPile, the average score sits at 65.7 out of 100. The rating breakdown includes five good titles and two that fall into the mixed range. No games reached the great category above 80 points. Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy stands as their highest-rated work from 2003 with a score of 76.6, followed by Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword in 2011 at 74.9. Test Drive Unlimited 2 also performed well with a 71.1 score. However, later releases like Defense Technica in October 2013 received a poor 47.5 rating, indicating a decline in quality toward the end of their run. The company faced significant internal and legal troubles before it ceased operations. In April 2010, Kaga Electronics acquired 51 percent of CyberFront shares, eventually buying the remaining stake in March 2013. The official notice of dissolution cited inadequacies in intellectual property rights as the primary cause for closing. Reports mentioned that business partners denied the existence of these rights, and no cooperation was received from the retired founder despite requests for assistance. This legal mess likely contributed to the company ending its operations after nearly two decades of activity.
