JoWooD Productions Software at a Glance

JoWooD Productions Software was an Austrian company founded in 1995 that operated primarily between 1998 and 2007. They published 25 games and developed four titles on PlayPile, totaling 27 entries in their catalog. The vast majority of their work appeared during the 2000s with 25 releases compared to just one title from the 1990s. Their output focused heavily on Strategy games with 13 titles, followed by Adventure games at nine and Real Time Strategy games at eight. They also released six Simulators, four Shooters, and smaller numbers of Role-playing games, Racing games, and Tactical titles. Almost all their games launched on PC for Microsoft Windows, though they did bring five titles to Xbox, five to PlayStation 2, three to Nintendo GameCube, and single releases on platforms like the Wii and Gizmondo. The quality of their catalog shows a clear trend over time. The average rating across 16 scored titles sits at 66.1 out of 100. Their best work includes Zax: The Alien Hunter with an 80 score, while Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2, Silent Storm, and SpellForce: The Order of Dawn all scored in the high 79 range. They also published Sam & Max: Save the World which reached a 78.1 rating. However, the majority of their portfolio falls into the good range between 60 and 79, with 11 titles there. They had four games that landed in the mixed category between 40 and 59. There are no poor titles below 40 on the list, but the drop-off at the end of their run was noticeable. Recent releases like Seven Kingdoms: Conquest scored 47.5, Panzer Elite Action: Fields of Glory hit 45, and FreakOut: Extreme Freeride sat at 50. This suggests a decline in quality or reception toward their final years before they shifted to North American markets via an acquisition of DreamCatcher Games in late 2006. JoWooD changed its name to JoWooD Entertainment AG in 2009 after ceasing active publishing operations under the original banner. Their history on PlayPile reflects a company that started strong with solid strategy and adventure games but struggled to maintain high scores as they expanded into different genres and markets. While they had several hits, their overall average rating indicates a mixed legacy rather than a consistent string of masterpieces.
