Kadokawa Shoten at a Glance

Kadokawa Shoten operates as a Japanese publisher with a long history in the gaming industry. Founded as an independent entity in 1995, it later became an internal division of Kadokawa Corporation in late 2013. The company has released games across multiple platforms over nearly three decades, though its output remains modest compared to major industry players. Data from PlayPile shows 31 titles where they acted as a publisher and only five where they served as a developer. Their library spans the PlayStation 2, PC, PSP, and original PlayStation systems, with the PlayStation 2 holding the largest share at nine games. The company focused heavily on specific genres throughout its run. Visual novels made up the biggest portion of their catalog with 16 titles, followed by adventure games at 13 and role-playing games at 10. They also released simulator, strategy, and tactical games in smaller numbers. Their production history shows a steady increase in output over time. The 1990s saw five releases, the 2000s brought 12 titles, and the 2010s yielded 14 games before their activity slowed around 2018. Quality ratings for Kadokawa Shoten vary significantly across their portfolio. The average rating on IGDB sits at 60.5 out of 100 based on four rated titles. This score is driven by a mix of results rather than consistent excellence. They have no games rated as great, meaning nothing reached the 80-point threshold. Their highest-rated title is Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete from 1996, which scored 79.7. Other notable entries include Rodea the Sky Soldier (2015) at 62 and Shuffle! (2004) at 60. Record of Lodoss War (2000) received a mixed rating of 40.3. Recent releases like Fuukan no Grasesta in November 2018 and various entries in the Konosuba franchise appear to follow this pattern of moderate reception. While they successfully published many visual novels, their average performance suggests a lack of standout hits in the broader market.
