Mattel, Inc. is an American multinational toy manufacturing and entertainment company founded in Los Angeles by Harold Matson and the husband-and-wife duo of Ruth and Elliot Handler in January 1945 and headquartered in El Segundo, California. Mattel has a presence in 35 countries and territories; its products are sold in more than 150 countries. Mattel consists of three business segments: North America, International and American Girl. It is the world's second largest toy maker in terms of revenue, after The Lego Group. Two of its historic and most valuable brands, Barbie and Hot Wheels, were respectively named the top global toy property and the top-selling global toy of the year for 2020 and 2021 by The NPD Group, a global information research company.

Mattel at a Glance

Mattel is a major American toy manufacturer that has also produced video games for over four decades. While the company operates globally with products in more than 150 countries, its gaming footprint on PlayPile includes 40 titles where they acted as publisher and only nine where they served as the developer. Their catalog spans from the early 1980s through 2023, though their output has fluctuated significantly over time. The peak period for their releases occurred in the 2000s with 13 games, followed by 10 titles in the 2010s. Activity slowed in the 1990s to four games and remains very low in the current decade with just one release recorded so far. The company shows a clear focus on casual genres rather than complex simulations or shooters. Their library leans heavily toward Quiz and Trivia games, which make up seven of their entries, alongside six Arcade titles and six Platformers. They also have a strong presence in Sport, Simulator, and Puzzle categories. This genre selection aligns with their history as a toy maker, often adapting brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels into playable formats. Their platform reach is equally broad but includes some obscure hardware. They released seven games for the HyperScan console, which was their most frequent target, followed by mobile platforms on iOS and Android. You will also find titles on vintage systems like the Nintendo Entertainment System and Intellivision, as well as niche devices such as the Terebikko / See 'n Say Video Phone and Handheld Electronic LCD screens. Quality across their known games is inconsistent. Only three titles have received ratings on IGDB, resulting in an average score of 67.9 out of 100. None of their rated games reached the great tier of 80 or higher. The highest-rated entry is Operation C from 1991 with a score of 76.9, and Rad Racer from 1987 sits at 68.9. Recent releases have struggled to match these earlier efforts. Hot Wheels Infinite Loop received a mixed rating of 58 in 2019. Other recent games like Match the Monsters! from July 2023 do not have ratings listed yet, and older entries like Phase 10 and Pictionary also lack high scores in their respective eras. The data suggests that while Mattel has maintained a steady stream of releases for decades, they have not consistently delivered highly acclaimed games by modern standards. Their strategy appears to rely on licensing familiar toy brands rather than creating clever gaming experiences.
