Perfect World Entertainment was established in 2008 as the North American subsidiary of Chinese publishing company Perfect World. In 2021 Embracer Group announced that they were in the process of buying Perfect World Entertainment, along with their subsidiaries and IP, to be placed under Gearbox's management. The deal was completed in 2022 and Perfect World Entertainment was then rebranded as Gearbox Publishing.
Perfect World Entertainment operated as a North American publisher from 2008 until it was acquired by Embracer Group in 2021 and fully integrated into Gearbox Publishing in 2022. The company released 19 games on PlayPile, serving as the publisher for 15 of them and the developer for seven. Their catalog spans from the late 2000s through the early 2020s, with output heavily concentrated in the 2010s which saw 13 titles. The 2000s had only one release, while the 2020s account for five. Most of their work targets PC users on Microsoft Windows with 16 games, though they also have a strong presence on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with nine releases each. The studio focused heavily on Role-playing games, with 13 titles in that genre, followed by Adventure games at nine and Shooters at five. Their overall quality record is mixed but leans toward average. They have 12 rated games with an average IGDB score of 68.2. One title reached the great category, nine landed in the good range, and two fell into the mixed bracket. No games were rated as poor. Their highest-rated release was Jade Dynasty from 2007, which scored 81.6. Other well-regarded entries include Remnant: From the Ashes at 76.5 and Gigantic at 73.3. More recent years show a decline in average quality for their major releases. Torchlight III arrived in June 2020 with a score of 57.9, placing it in the mixed tier. Magic: Legends launched in March 2021 to moderate reception. The company released several versions of Remnant between 2019 and 2020, including Subject 2923 which scored 71.8. Farside came out in January 2022 just before the rebranding process concluded. The data indicates a pattern where their early work like Forsaken World performed better than some of their later standalone titles. While they maintained a broad platform reach including Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS, the bulk of their volume remained on PC.
