Renegade Software at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile to understand Renegade Software, you should know this company operated only from 1991 to 1996. Based in the United Kingdom, they were founded by the Bitmap Brothers after their previous deal with Mirrorsoft ended. They published 16 games during their short life and did not develop any titles themselves. Their output was entirely focused on the 1990s. The company released most of its catalog on the Amiga, which saw all 16 titles, followed by DOS with 11 releases. They also supported the Atari ST/STE with seven games and the Amiga CD32 with five. Later in their run, they moved to systems like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Mega Drive, and even BlackBerry OS, though these platforms had only two games each. The publisher had a clear preference for sports games, which made up seven of their 16 releases. Platformers were their second most common genre with four titles, while shooters also accounted for four entries. They published adventure games, arcade titles, puzzles, and fighting games as well. Their reputation on PlayPile is mixed but leans toward the positive side. Across the seven games that have user ratings, the average score sits at 74.6 out of 100. Three of their titles are rated great with scores above 80, while four others fall into the good range between 60 and 79. There are no mixed or poor rated games in their catalog on this site. Their best work includes Sensible World of Soccer from 1994 and Sensible Soccer: European Champions from 1992, both holding an impressive 85.1 rating. Gods from 1991 also achieved a great score of 80.1. As the company progressed into the mid-1990s, their scores began to drop slightly. Recent releases like Sensible World of Soccer '96/'97 and The Chaos Engine 2 both received ratings around 70.1. Renegade Software published games for other developers as well as their own projects until they were acquired by Time Warner in 1995. They stopped releasing new titles shortly after that acquisition in late 1996.
