Team Shanghai Alice (Japanese: 上海アリス幻樂団, Hepburn: Shanhai Arisu Gengakudan, lit. "Shanghai Alice Fantasy Ensemble"), formerly known as ZUN Soft, is a Japanese dōjin game developer. Since 1995, the sole member of the group, Jun'ya "ZUN" Ōta, has independently developed and self-published the Touhou Project, a bullet hell shoot 'em up series, as well as collaborated with other circles to produce related print works and music albums.
Team Shanghai Alice operates as a Japanese independent studio founded in 1999 by Jun'ya "ZUN" Ōta. This developer has released 30 titles across PlayPile, serving as both the sole creator and publisher for almost every entry. The catalog spans from 1996 to 2025, showing a consistent output that grew significantly in the 2010s when they released 13 games compared to just five in the 1990s. Their work has shifted slightly over time, moving from the PC-9800 Series platform in the early days to focusing almost entirely on Microsoft Windows, with 24 titles for that system. They have also reached PlayStation 4 once, but their primary reach remains on personal computers. The studio is best known for the Touhou Project, a bullet hell shooter series that defines their genre focus. Out of their 30 games, 27 are shooters and another 27 fall under the arcade category. They have also ventured into indie titles, adventure games, fighting games, and puzzle games, though these make up a small fraction of their total output. Quality trends for Team Shanghai Alice show a generally positive reception among critics. Of the 17 rated titles on PlayPile, one stands out as great with a score above 80, while 15 fall into the good range between 60 and 79. There is only one mixed rating and no poor scores in their history. Their highest-rated games include Touhou Youyoumu: Perfect Cherry Blossom from 2003 and Touhou Chireiden: Subterranean Animism from 2008, both scoring over 80 points. Recent releases confirm the group is still active with titles like Touhou Kinjoukyou: Fossilized Wonders scheduled for August 2025. Earlier recent entries include Touhou Juuouen: Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost in 2023 and Black Market of Bulletphilia: 100th Black Market in 2022. The developer maintains a steady pace with new games appearing every few years, though the count drops to just four titles released in the 2020s so far. While their average IGDB rating sits at 74.6 across all rated entries, the consistency remains strong as they continue to self-publish their work through their own website.
