The House of Hikmah Preview: AAA Veterans Tackle Grief Through Islamic Golden Age

Grief does not come with instructions. Anyone who has lost someone close knows the specific kind of silence that follows, the questions that pile up without answers. The House of Hikmah takes that feeling and builds an entire game around it. Lunacy Studios, a new indie outfit formed by veterans from some of gaming's biggest franchises, launches their debut title on PC via Steam on April 8, 2026.

The game follows Maya, a 14-year-old girl navigating the aftermath of her father's death. Rather than presenting grief as a problem to solve, the developers have crafted a dreamlike space where healing happens gradually through exploration, conversation, and puzzle-solving. The premise sounds heavy. The execution looks surprisingly hopeful.

What Is The House of Hikmah?

The House of Hikmah is a narrative 3D adventure set within the House of Wisdom, a mythical sanctuary inspired by the historical Bayt al-Hikma from the Islamic Golden Age. Players guide Maya through nine distinct worlds, each themed around a different scholar and their area of expertise. The structure lets the game explore philosophy, science, and culture while keeping Maya's personal journey at the center.

The puzzle mechanics revolve around an ancient heirloom left behind by Maya's father. This device can transform matter, allowing players to glide through wind channels, transmute metal to tip scales, walk through walls of immaterial ether, and bend light through glass. Physics serves the narrative here. Each puzzle reflects something Maya needs to learn or overcome.

AAA Veterans Going Indie

Lunacy Studios operates as a fully remote team with experience from some significant projects. Their credits include Life is Strange, Star Wars: Battlefront, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, and The Walking Dead. That pedigree shows in the production values visible in early footage. The environments are detailed and atmospheric, the character animation is expressive, and the game features full voice acting in both English and Arabic.

Austin Wintory composed the score. His work on Journey earned a Grammy nomination and BAFTA win. He also scored Abzu, The Pathless, and more recently Sword of the Sea. Music matters enormously in a game about emotional processing, and securing Wintory signals serious intent.

Representation Matters

The Islamic Golden Age setting is genuinely rare in games. This era produced foundational work in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy, yet it rarely appears outside educational contexts. Creative Director Faris Attieh has spoken about wanting to create representation that has never been seen before in games while telling a universally relatable story about grief.

Maya interacts with historical scholars throughout her journey. These conversations are not just exposition dumps. The scholars have their own healing journeys, their own lessons to share. The fully voiced cast includes Sophia Eleni (Cairn), Nezar Alderazi (Battlefield 6), Laila Alj (Assassin's Creed Mirage), and Ben Turner (Split Fiction). That level of voice talent suggests conversations worth having.

The Challenge Ahead

The game introduces an antagonist called the Widow, described as a surreal force embodying unmanaged grief. This creates tension in what could otherwise feel too gentle. Maya has to overcome something, not just wander through pretty environments collecting wisdom. How the game balances its emotional themes with actual gameplay challenges will determine whether it resonates beyond its premise.

Nine distinct worlds is ambitious for a debut indie project. Each one promises different visual themes and puzzle mechanics tied to the residing scholar's expertise. Managing that variety while maintaining emotional coherence requires careful design. The trailer footage suggests Lunacy Studios has the artistic vision. Whether they can sustain it across the full runtime remains to be seen.

Release Details

The House of Hikmah launches April 8, 2026 exclusively on PC via Steam. The game will be available with full English and Arabic voiceover and text localization. No Early Access period. The studio is releasing the complete experience from day one.
