Koei Tecmo Holdings Co., Ltd. is a Japanese video game, amusement and anime holding company created in 2009 by the merger of Koei and Tecmo. Koei Tecmo Holdings owns several companies, the biggest one of those being its flagship video game developer and publisher Koei Tecmo Games that was founded in 1978 as Koei. The company is best known for their Nobunaga's Ambition, Dynasty Warriors, Atelier, Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Monster Rancher, Fatal Frame, and Nioh franchises. They are also known for their work on external video game franchises, namely on Square Enix's Final Fantasy and Nintendo's Fire Emblem.
Koei Tecmo is a major Japanese publisher and developer founded in 2009 through the merger of Koei and Tecmo. Their legacy traces back to 1978 when their predecessor Koei began operations, with actual game releases starting in the late 1980s. The company has been active from 1989 through at least 2026. Their catalog on PlayPile includes 78 titles, though they published 74 of these while developing only eight directly. The majority of their output arrived during the 2010s with 38 games and the 2020s with 31 games. Early decades saw very little activity, with just one game in the 1980s, three in the 1990s, and three in the 2000s. Their portfolio covers a wide range of genres, with Role-playing games being the dominant focus at 42 titles. They also have significant presence in Adventure (23), Hack and slash/Beat 'em up (20), and Strategy (17). Platform support is strongest on PlayStation 4 with 39 releases, followed by PC with 35, and Nintendo Switch with 31. They maintain a smaller footprint on Xbox One and Series X|S combined, totaling only 11 games. The overall quality of their work shows a mixed picture. Their average IGDB rating sits at 71.6 out of 100 across 23 rated titles. The majority of these ratings fall into the good range between 60 and 79. They have achieved great status on only two occasions, with Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream scoring 87.3 in 2022 and Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian reaching 82 in 2025. A few titles did not meet expectations, including three rated as mixed and one classified as poor. Romance of the Three Kingdoms II from 1989 remains a high point with a 79.8 score. Recent years show a heavy reliance on the Atelier franchise. The company has scheduled multiple Atelier Ryza remasters for late 2025 alongside the new Resleriana entry. They also continue to support older franchises like Dynasty Warriors with a complete edition release in December 2026. Their reputation extends beyond their own series to include work on external projects such as Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem. Despite some highs, the bulk of their output delivers solid but not exceptional experiences for most players.
