Make Software

Japan Founded 1988 Website

Make Software, Inc. (株式会社メイクソフトウェア) was an Osaka-based company that made and sold print seal machines (photo booths). It was established in December 1988 and incorporated in November 1989. The company was originally founded as a video game developer, which it was until December 2000. The president was Hiro Yamamoto (山本廣), formerly of Nichibutsu. Make Software entered the print seal machine market in 1997 during the "purikura boom." Unfortunately, sales and revenue decreased in later years, and the company declared bankruptcy on October 24, 2018. The print seal machine business was transferred to Kaga Devices on December 1, 2018.

Make Software at a Glance

Make Software operated as a Japanese developer and publisher from 1991 until late 2000. Based in Osaka, the company started as a maker of photo booth print seal machines before shifting focus entirely to video games in its early years. Their game catalog on PlayPile contains twelve titles, all developed by them with one also credited as a publisher. The studio released eleven games during the 1990s and only one entry in the 2000s before ceasing development. The company had a diverse portfolio that covered many genres including card and board games, strategy, shooters, and adventure titles. They worked across numerous hardware platforms, with the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine seeing the most activity with four releases. The PlayStation family of systems also featured prominently with three games on the original console and two each on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Other platforms included the Family Computer, Super Famicom, Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, and Satellaview. Their game library includes well-known series like Momotaro Dentetsu, which saw multiple entries such as Momotaro Dentetsu V and Momotaro Dentetsu Happy during the late 1990s. Other notable releases include Bomberman Land, Kaibutsu Para-Dice, and Disney's DuckTales 2. The only title with a rating on PlayPile is Disney's DuckTales 2 from 1993, which holds a score of 83.9 out of 100. This single data point suggests the company could produce high-quality work at its peak, though the lack of other rated titles limits a broader assessment of their consistency. Make Software changed business strategies significantly over time. The president was Hiro Yamamoto, who previously worked at Nichibutsu. In 1997, the firm entered the print seal machine market during the purikura boom. This shift coincided with a sharp drop in game output. After releasing only one game in the 2000s, the company eventually stopped making games altogether. They declared bankruptcy in October 2018 after revenues declined in their print machine business. The assets of that division were transferred to Kaga Devices later that year.
