Mindscape

Netherlands Founded 1983 Website

Mindscape was originally formed in October 1983 in Illinois by Roger Buoy. Through a number of acquisitions and popular games, the company quickly became a powerhouse in the game industry. In 1990, it was acquired by The Software Toolworks, who wanted to utilize the company's relationship with Nintendo and used it as a label for publishing games for Nintendo consoles. In 1994, Toolworks was acquired by Pearson, adopting the Mindscape name in the process. In 1998, it was acquired again by The Learning Company, which would later be acquired by Mattel, who occasionally used the Mindscape name for some games, before being purchased by Jean-Pierre Nordman and being relocated to France. Following the poor performance of its products, Mindscape exited the video game industry in August 2011. However, its Australian and Dutch divisions were unaffected by the shutdown, and remain in operation independent of its former parent.

Mindscape at a Glance

Mindscape is a publisher and developer based in the Netherlands that has been active since 1983. The company currently holds 148 games on PlayPile, with 143 listed under their publishing credit and 39 under development. Their catalog spans from the mid-1980s to 2027, covering a period of over four decades. The bulk of their output occurred during the 1990s, where they released 70 titles. This was followed by 37 games in the 2000s and 18 in the 2020s. The 1980s saw 13 releases, while only 4 games appeared in the 2010s before their exit from the industry in 2011. Their platform reach is heavily weighted toward personal computers. They released 67 titles for Microsoft Windows and 36 for DOS. They also have a significant presence on older hardware with 18 games each for Mac and Amiga, along with 18 for Atari ST/STE. More recent releases include titles for the Nintendo Switch (16), Wii (15), DS (13), PlayStation (12), and PlayStation 5 (10). In terms of genre, Adventure is their most common category with 46 games, followed by Puzzle (24), Simulator (23), Strategy (23), Sport (18), Racing (14), Arcade (13), Point-and-click (13), Role-playing (13), and Shooter (12). The quality of their work varies significantly across their history. The average rating for 33 rated titles is 67.1 out of 100. Their best work includes Rat Attack! from 1999 with a score of 86.5, Steel Panthers from 1995 at 84, and 4-D Boxing from 1991 at 83.2. They also have strong entries like Shadowgate (1987) at 83.1 and SimFarm (1993) at 82. However, their ratings breakdown shows a mixed bag with 19 good titles, but also 6 mixed games and 2 poor ones under 40. Recent releases reflect this inconsistency. Windstorm: Start of a Great Friendship - Remastered from June 2024 scored 80, while Dog Man: Mission Impawsible in December 2024 received only 53. Upcoming titles include The Legend of Khiimori scheduled for March 2027 and Unpetrified: Echoes of Nature for November 2025. The company has undergone many ownership changes since its founding in Illinois by Roger Buoy. It was acquired by The Software Toolworks in 1990, then by Pearson in 1994, and later by The Learning Company before being purchased by Mattel. After a period of poor product performance, the main entity shut down in August 2011, though its Dutch division continued operations independently under new ownership in France.
