UPL at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile to understand the history of Japanese game companies, UPL is a publisher that operated from the early 1980s until its collapse in 1992. The company was originally founded in 1972 as a subsidiary of Universal Entertainment before officially becoming UPL Co. Ltd on November 1, 1983. Despite a long operational life, their catalog on this site contains only 20 titles, with 12 released under their publishing arm and 19 developed in-house. Their output was heavily concentrated in the arcade market, where they released 19 games, while other platforms like MSX, Sega Mega Drive, and Super Nintendo received far fewer releases. The company focused primarily on action-heavy genres. Data shows 14 shooter titles and 14 arcade games in their portfolio. They also ventured into platformers, puzzles, sports, and beat 'em ups, though these categories appear much less frequently. The bulk of their work came during the 1980s when they released 14 games. Activity slowed significantly in the 1990s with only five titles before the company filed for bankruptcy in March 1992. A single entry appears in the data from the 2020s, which is actually a re-release of their earlier work titled Arcade Archives: Koutetsu Yousai Strahl in July 2020. Quality metrics for UPL show mixed results. The average rating across three rated titles sits at 58.8 out of 100. Their highest-rated games include Raiders5 from 1985 with a score of 64 and Atomic Robo-Kid from 1988 scoring 61.9. Acrobat Mission from 1991 holds a score of 50.6. While they avoided the lowest rating tier, they did not achieve any great scores above 80. Their later releases in the early 1990s like Black Heart and Vandyke do not show high ratings on this platform. The company ceased operations shortly after releasing Acrobat Mission and other titles in that era, leaving a legacy defined by arcade shooters rather than sustained success across multiple decades or platforms.
