Vicarious Visions is a United States based studio founded in 1990 that operated actively from 1996 through 2020. This developer has released 56 games on PlayPile, with only two titles published by them while the remaining 54 were developed for other companies. Their output was not consistent across all eras. The studio released just four games in the 1990s before entering a massive production phase in the 2000s where they launched 36 titles. Activity slowed to 11 games in the 2010s and dropped to only four in the 2020s before operations ceased. The company focused heavily on platformers with 23 releases in that genre, followed closely by adventure games at 22 entries. They also made a significant number of sports games totaling 11, along with simulators and hack and slash titles. Their work spanned many systems including PC with 18 games, the Game Boy Advance with 14, and modern consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One which each hosted 13 of their projects. The studio also developed for older handhelds such as the Game Boy Color and Nintendo DS. Quality on PlayPile shows a generally positive trend among rated titles. Out of 27 games with scores, eight achieved great ratings above 80 while 14 landed in the good range between 60 and 79. No titles received poor scores below 40. The highest rated game is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 from 2020 which holds an 86.1 score. Other top performers include Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock from 2007 and the Crash Bandicoot remaster from 2017. Recent releases like the Tony Hawk remasters in September 2020 show they could still produce high quality work near the end of their run, though their total output in the last decade was much smaller than during their peak in the 2000s.
