IO Interactive at a Glance

IO Interactive stands as a Danish studio founded in September 1998 by the Reto-Moto development group in Copenhagen. Their catalog on PlayPile contains 29 titles where they served as either publisher or developer. The company has been active from 2000 to 2026, releasing eight games in the 2000s, thirteen in the 2010s, and seven in the 2020s. Their output shifted significantly during this period as they moved away from being a subsidiary of Square Enix after seeking buyers in 2017. A management buyout in June 2017 allowed them to regain independent status while keeping rights for Hitman and Freedom Fighters. The studio focuses heavily on the shooter genre with 22 titles, followed by tactical games at 15 entries and adventure games at 14. They have also released two puzzle games, one simulator, one platformer, and one role-playing game. Their platform reach is strongest on PC with Microsoft Windows hosting 20 of their releases. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One each hold 10 titles, while older consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have seven and five games respectively. They have also released games for Mac, Xbox Series X|S, Google Stadia, and the original Xbox. Quality trends show a generally positive reception across their work. The average IGDB rating sits at 76.5 out of 100 based on 17 rated titles. Their portfolio includes six great scores above 80, ten good scores between 60 and 79, and one mixed score in the 40 to 59 range. No titles fell into the poor category below 40. The Hitman series drives much of their critical success. Top rated titles include Hitman: Game of the Year Edition from 2017 at 90.4, Hitman Absolution: Elite Edition from 2014 at 87.7, and Hitman: Blood Money HD from 2013 at 86.7. More recent entries like Hitman 3 from 2021 hold an 85.3 score, while Hitman 2 from 2018 sits at 81.8. Recent releases show a mix of performance levels. Hitman: Blood Money Reprisal from November 2023 received a 72 score, and the VR version of Hitman 3 in September 2024 maintained the high standard. However, MindsEye released in June 2025 with a lower 59.6 score. Future plans include 007 First Light scheduled for May 2026. The data indicates that while their recent output is smaller than their peak in the 2010s, their established reputation in the stealth and tactical shooter space remains strong despite occasional dips in player ratings for newer projects.
