Acclaim Studios Manchester (formerly Software Creations) was a British video game developer based in Manchester, England. The company was established in 1985 by Richard Kay. They were primarily known for their video games based on movie and comic licences like Marvel Comics, Cutthroat Island, Disney's Beauty and the Beast and the original titles Plok, Solstice, and its sequel Equinox.
Software Creations operated as a British developer from 1985 until 2002, with the bulk of its activity occurring during the 1990s when they released 25 games. Their catalog on PlayPile includes 39 titles in total, where they served as the developer for 33 projects and published seven. The company built a significant presence on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System with 11 releases, followed by six games each for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and DOS. They also supported the Nintendo Entertainment System, PC, PlayStation, Game Boy Color, Game Boy, and the less common 64DD. Genre-wise, the studio focused heavily on platformers, which account for 12 of their listed games. Adventure titles made up eight entries, while arcade, puzzle, shooter, and sport games rounded out their output with five to six releases each. Their early work included one game in the 1980s, but their production volume dropped significantly in the 2000s with only nine releases. The ratings for their 17 scored titles show a mixed quality trend. The average score sits at 60.9 out of 100. Only one title reached great status with an 80 or higher. They have eight games rated as good and another eight that fall into the mixed category. No titles were rated poor. Their highest-rated game is Jetpack from 1993, which holds an 82.2 score. Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98 followed with 77.5 points. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade scored 73.3 in 1991. Later efforts like The Simpsons: Night of the Living - Treehouse of Horror in 2001 received a 69.4 score, while Rugrats: Castle Capers and UEFA Euro 2000 posted lower scores near the mid-60s range. They often worked with licensed properties such as Marvel Comics and Cutthroat Island, alongside original IPs like Plok and Solstice. Recent releases included The Ripping Friends in April 2002 and NASCAR Racers in November 2000. The company eventually became Acclaim Studios Manchester before closing its doors.
