Activision

United States Founded 1979 Website

For more than 30 years, Activision has been changing the way people play. In the process, we have built one of the largest portfolios of recognized brands and today we are one of the most valuable interactive entertainment companies in the world. Founded in 1979 as the first independent video game software developer and distributor, the company launched a series of multi-million unit selling titles in the early 1980s for the Atari 2600 including Pitfall, Kaboom! and River Raid. And since then, Activision has created some of the most iconic and memorable game experiences of all time.

Activision at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile to understand who published the games on your system, Activision stands as a massive entity from the United States with a catalog spanning over forty years. Founded in 1979, this company has released 605 titles across their history, acting primarily as a publisher for 588 of those games while developing 95 themselves. Their output has fluctuated significantly by decade, starting with 102 games in the 1980s and dropping to 70 in the 1990s before exploding to 237 titles in the 2000s. The momentum slowed slightly in the 2010s with 163 releases, and recent data shows only 19 games listed for the 2020s so far. The company covers a wide range of platforms, with PC Microsoft Windows leading at 242 titles, followed by Xbox 360 with 139 entries. They have also maintained a strong presence on older hardware like the Commodore C64 and Nintendo DS. In terms of genre focus, Shooter games dominate their library with 184 releases, while Adventure titles follow closely with 167. Other common categories include Sport, Simulator, and Platformers. Quality varies widely within their portfolio. The average rating across 342 rated titles sits at 66.1 out of 100. Their catalog includes 58 games rated as great, but it also contains 79 titles with mixed scores and 19 that are considered poor. Some of their highest-rated works include Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice from 2019, which holds a score of 90.5, along with Dark Reign 2 and Battlezone 2: Combat Commander from the year 2000. They also released The Ultimate Doom in 1995 with a rating of 88.2. Recent releases show a different picture for some players. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, scheduled for November 2025, has an early rating of just 52.1. Even recent major entries like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III from late 2023 received a score of 61.2. While Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 performed better with a 78.7 in late 2024, the trend for their latest shooters appears to be inconsistent. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 are also listed for release in July 2025. Activision has built one of the largest portfolios of recognized brands since its early days with Pitfall and River Raid, but their recent performance suggests a mix of high-profile hits and titles that struggle to meet player expectations.
