Vic Tokai, now known as Tokai Communications was a game developer and publisher who worked with Sega during the 1980s and 1990s.
Vic Tokai, now operating under the name Tokai Communications, is a Japanese company founded in 1977 that released games from 1986 to 1997. The studio produced a total of 39 titles on PlayPile, with 33 credited as a publisher and 17 as a developer. Their output was heavily concentrated in the 1990s with 29 releases compared to just 8 games in the 1980s. They focused primarily on platformers, adventure games, and shooters, while also publishing sports titles and role-playing games. The company worked across many systems, including the Sega Mega Drive, Super Famicom, Family Computer, Game Boy, and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The quality of their work shows significant variation over time. Their average rating across 11 scored titles sits at 65.3 out of 100. This score is built on one great title rated above 80, seven good games between 60 and 79, two mixed entries, and one poor game below 40. Their peak performance occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s with titles like Clash at Demonhead from 1989 which holds an 88.8 rating. Trouble Shooter from 1991 and Battle Mania Daiginjou from 1993 also received high marks of nearly 80. Defcon 5 in 1995 maintained a decent score of 70. Things changed for the publisher as they moved toward the end of their active years. Recent releases from 1996 and 1997 show a sharp drop in quality. Dark Rift released in July 1997 received only 54 points, while Criticom from November 1995 scored just 30 out of 100. Other later titles like AeroFighters Assault and The Gene Machine did not reach the heights set by their earlier hits. Vic Tokai was a busy developer during the height of the 16-bit console era but struggled to maintain that standard in their final years of operation. Their portfolio spans multiple genres but remains defined by their strong partnership with Sega during the 80s and 90s.
