HAL Laboratory

Japan Founded 1980 Website

HAL Laboratory is a Japanese game developer partnered with Nintendo. It was founded by a small group of friends who shared the desire to create games, and among said group was Satoru Iwata. The group developed games for numerous platforms at first before developing exclusively for Nintendo. The name HAL originates from the fictional computer HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as each letter being one letter before IBM. HAL Laboratory is most notable for developing the Kirby series created by ex-employee Masahiro Sakurai, they are also responsible for the Super Smash Bros. and the EarthBound series.

HAL Laboratory at a Glance

HAL Laboratory stands as a Japanese developer founded in 1980 with deep ties to Nintendo. The company began when a small group of friends, including Satoru Iwata, started making games for various platforms before they eventually focused solely on Nintendo systems. Their name comes from the fictional computer HAL 9000 and reflects that each letter is one step before IBM in the alphabet. Over forty years, they have released 144 titles across their catalog. They act as a developer on most projects with 136 games, though they also published 33 titles under their own name. The company has produced work for nearly every Nintendo system from the Family Computer to the Switch 2. Their output peaked in the 1990s with 44 games and dropped significantly in the 2020s with only five releases so far. The 1980s saw 33 titles while the 2000s had 31 and the 2010s held 22. This shift shows a smaller recent volume of work compared to previous decades. Their genre focus leans heavily toward platformers with 52 games, followed by adventure and puzzle titles at 35 each. They also make arcade and strategy games but have released fewer fighting or racing titles. Quality has been consistently strong across their history. Of the 61 rated titles on PlayPile, the average score is 73.6 out of 100. The breakdown shows 14 great games scoring 80 or higher and 42 good titles between 60 and 79. There are only five mixed ratings and no poor scores below 40. Their highest rated game is Super Smash Bros. Melee from 2001 with a score of 94.5. Mother 3 followed with 90.1, and Kirby's Return to Dream Land scored 88.1 in 2011. Recent years show they continue to deliver high scores despite releasing fewer games. Kirby and the Forgotten Land received 85.1 in 2022, and its 2025 Switch 2 edition earned 84.3. Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe scored 80.8 in early 2023. Some recent mobile or spin-off titles like Kirby Fighters 2 score lower at 65, but the main entries remain very strong. They are known for the Kirby series created by former employee Masahiro Sakurai, the Super Smash Bros. franchise, and the EarthBound series. Their work spans decades but remains centered on Nintendo hardware with a focus on platforming and family-friendly gameplay.
