Hudson Soft

Japan Founded 1973 Website

Hudson Soft Co., Ltd. was a Japanese video game company known for releasing numerous titles across video game consoles, home computers, and mobile phones. Headquartered in the Midtown Tower in Tokyo, it also maintained an office in the Hudson Building in Sapporo. Founded on May 18, 1973, Hudson initially focused on personal computer products before expanding into video game development, publishing, peripherals, and music production. Hudson Soft became a publicly traded company in 2000. In 2005, Konami acquired a 55% controlling stake in Hudson, later purchasing the company outright on April 1, 2011. On March 1, 2012, Hudson merged with Konami Digital Entertainment, which retains its game catalog and periodically re-releases Hudson's classic titles.

Hudson Soft at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile looking to understand the history of a major Japanese entity, Hudson Soft offers a clear case study in volume and consistency over quality. Founded in 1973, this publisher operated for nearly four decades before merging with Konami in 2012. Their catalog on our site contains 462 entries, reflecting a massive output that grew steadily from just one game in the 1970s to 189 titles in the 1990s. The 2000s saw slightly fewer releases at 161 games, and their activity dropped to just 21 titles in the 2010s before they were acquired. The data shows a company that covered many platforms but leaned heavily on Nintendo hardware. Their top platform was the Wii with 83 games, followed by the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine with 44 releases and the Super Famicom with 41. They also maintained a strong presence on legacy mobile devices and the Game Boy. Genre-wise, their focus was broad but clearly centered on Arcade games, which make up 89 of their entries. Adventure and Puzzle titles followed with 73 and 70 games respectively. They also produced 62 Platformers and 51 Role-playing games, indicating a willingness to experiment across different styles rather than sticking to one niche. Quality metrics suggest a generally solid but not exceptional track record. The average IGDB rating for their 117 rated titles sits at 67.1 out of 100. While they did produce 15 great games and 77 good ones, there are also 20 mixed and 5 poor entries in the database. Their highest-rated work includes Super Bomberman 5 from 1997, which holds a score of 93.2, and Soldier Blade from 1992 with a 90. Other highly rated titles like Bomberman '94 and Neo Bomberman confirm their strength in the arcade action space during the mid-to-late 1990s. In their final years before the merger, the company released titles such as Tetris: Axis and Nikoli's Pencil Puzzle in 2011. These recent releases show a rating around 70, which aligns with their average performance. The company started by making personal computer products before shifting to full video game development. After becoming publicly traded in 2000, Konami took control in 2005 and fully purchased them in 2011. Hudson Soft remains active through Konami, but the original studio ceased its independent operations over a decade ago.
